About
I'm Joseph Milfort II, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania studying Finance and AI in Business, with a minor in Philosophy. I'm from Atlanta, Georgia, and attended boarding school in Chattanooga, Tennessee at McCallie School.
I'm a former competitive tennis player and four-time state champion (that's me on the front page), but these days, I'm especially interested in fitness, reading, investing, and emerging technology.
My path has been nothing traditional. I don't come from a finance family. Both of my parents went to public school. My dad's parents are Haitian immigrants, and my mom's family began as sharecropper farmers in South Georgia. My interest in investing started in middle school, when I was first introduced to the power of impact investing. Oprah Winfrey, Delta Air Lines, the Coca-Cola Foundation, and other major organizations visited my school and donated $10 million to invest in our education. Is this not crazy lol?
That experience taught me firsthand how thoughtful capital allocation can drive growth, expand opportunity, and change lives.
Since then, I've tried to attack every opportunity in front of me: from boarding school, to Wharton, to a summer in Medellín, then Lisbon, and coming up on NYC. I also try to give back and learn whenever I can, whether through mentoring incoming minority freshmen or serving as Chief Investment Officer for BlackGen Capital.
During my freshman summer, I worked in Middle Market Investment Banking in Medellín, Colombia, which was an incredible experience. This past summer, I worked in New York City at TowerBrook Capital Partners with their Impact Fund. This upcoming summer, I'll be joining Blackstone in the Tactical Opportunities group.
Ultimately, my goal is to continue sharpening my mind, building my skill set, and using investing to create meaningful impact, especially in communities like the one that shaped me.
I've always been interested in business because of the change it can create, and I believe private equity is one of the best places to start. I'm drawn to private equity and investing for two main reasons. First, because of the role PE plays in shaping industries and driving business transformation. At a private equity firm, you sit at the center of companies, markets, and ideas. Second, because of the growth it demands. I'm internally competitive, curious about the world, and always looking for ways to get better.
I'm also deeply interested in emerging technology, and this site will serve as a place for me to test ideas, share thoughts, and continue building.
More than anything, I want to be a strong return on investment for the people, communities, and opportunities that helped me get here.
That's me in a nutshell.
